City of Roanoke Makes Grant Funds Available for Environmental Cleanup of Properties

    August 27, 2012

Roanoke, VA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently extended the city’s Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant to September 2013. RLF funds are used for the environmental cleanup of properties, including lead and asbestos abatement. The grant still has more than $1 million available for low to no-interest loans to for-profit entities and up to $200,000 in grant funds to non-profit organizations. The former Virginian Railway Station on Jefferson Street is an example of a recent RLF project.

More than $475,000 in assessment grants is also still available for property owners and prospective buyers through the city’s brownfields program. These funds can be used for Phase I and II environmental site assessments, and other studies. The city has three environmental firms under contract to provide these services as expeditiously as the private sector. City staff handles administration of the grants and coordinates services for applicants. Recent assessments have been completed at 1210 Patterson Ave., 305 1st St., and 131 Campbell Ave.

Properties anywhere in the city may be eligible. All property owners and prospective buyers are encouraged to call Frederick Gusler, Senior City Planner with the Department of Planning, Building and Development, at 853-1104, or email him at frederick.gusler@roanokeva.gov. For more information about the city’s brownfields program, visit http://www.roanokeva.gov/brownfields.

Webinar: Transforming Schools with PLT GreenSchools! Waste Investigation
    May 23, 2012, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Eastern

Kelley Dennings, Director of Recycling Programs and Services with Keep America Beautiful, will discuss how to set up a school recycling program and how your school can become involved in the Recycle-Bowl competition, a free competition and benchmarking tool for K-12 school recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities. Learn about how school recycling programs across the nation compete in a race to collect the most recyclables.

Students and teachers from St. Columba School in Durango, CO, will share their newest endeavor in reducing school waste through a solar vermicomposting bin. Students have taken the lead in feeding worms from the school cafeteria and are studying the science behind vermicomposting as well as the bin’s impact on reducing school waste. You’ll also hear about their experience conducting PLT’s GreenSchools Waste Investigation, integrating the investigation in to the curriculum, and how they are using the results to further their school’s waste reduction.

    The Presenters are:
    Kelley Dennings, Keep American Beautiful

Kelley Dennings has been working in the recycling industry for around 15 years. After graduating from NC State, she worked in NC as a Recycling and Keep America Beautiful Coordinator for 7 years. She implemented a school recycling program and an electronics recycling program. She then worked for the state’s recycling office for 5 years where she conducted various social marketing projects for the RE3.org campaign and the state’s plastic bottle ban. In 2010, she received her project management certification and joined the Keep America Beautiful organization in their Washington DC recycling office. Her role with Keep America Beautiful includes overseeing projects regarding school recycling, recycling on the go, rural recycling and social marketing.

St. Columba School Students and Teachers
Lu Boren, middle school teacher at St. Columba School in Durango, CO will lead her team of students on the webinar. Lu teaches earth science, chemistry, physics, life science and other subjects to students in grades 6, 7, and 8. She uses environmental topics and PLT activities to engage her students in their learning and has energized the entire school community in new approaches to learning. Through her efforts, St. Columba became a PLT GreenSchool in 2011 and students and faculty throughout the school are involved in investigating and improving their school’s environmental footprint.

Urban Tree Canopy Increases, Providing Many Community Benefits

    April 26, 2012

ROANOKE, VA – Recently released data indicates that the city’s Urban Tree Canopy has increased from 32 percent to 48 percent since 1997. This data was reported in a comprehensive study completed by the Virginia Department of Forestry, University of Vermont, Virginia Tech, and the Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Commission. Trees provide many benefits to the Roanoke community, including:

•Removing 304 tons of air pollutants each year, for a total annual value of $2,270,000
•Providing an annual energy benefit of $511,000
•Increasing property values by $913,127 from street trees
•Providing an annunal stormwater benefit of $1,022,236 from street trees
    •Providing a benefit-cost ratio of street trees of 6.61 to 1

In addition, the National Arbor Day Foundation reports that “it has been conservatively estimated that over $1.5 billion per year is generated in tax revenue for communities in the U.S. due to the value of privately owned trees on residential property.” Roanoke’s comprehensive plan, Vision 2001-2020, states that “maintaining and increasing the city’s tree canopy will have a beneficial impact on air quality, stormwater control, noise levels, temperature and visual appearance.” Dan Henry, Roanoke Urban Forester, says “tree canopy plays an important role in Roanoke’s popular and growing greenway and outdoor tourism movement.”
