Earth Korps Inc is a non-profit organization started in May 2010 by a 22 year old river enthusiast that goes by the name Captain Beau Morgan. Their mission is to remove physical pollution from the Shenandoah River and other fresh water systems like it and also to educate the youth in order to preserve Earth’s natural resources and habitats for generations to come.
Since their beginnings Earth Korps Inc has successfully removed and recycled over 30,000 pounds of trash from the river with only a handful of volunteers and only the most necessary equipment. We’re not talking about cans and bottles,(which they do remove) we’re talking about parts of old campers, culverts, tires, refrigerators, tons and tons of scrap metal, grills, and everything else that could give you a sore back in the morning.
A few months into his crusade Captain Morgan decided to take on kids that need to complete community service hours in an effort to not only have the grateful help of free labor, but also the pleasure of providing these kids with a positive role model not too far from their age, and with that, being able to implant the seed of environmental knowledge and the idea of future preservation in their heads. The project was a huge success and many kids have now not only completed their community service hours but willingly continue the work they have started on the river because they enjoy doing so.
This organization may be new to town but they are young, able, and determined to make an impact on the environment on not only a local level but also to get enough people involved to start a movement in the right direction as said before to preserve our planet for generations to come.
